The San Francisco Bay Area is not one build environment, and a bocce court specification that is right in one part of it is wrong in another. Comparing options sensibly means first working out which Bay Area you are actually in.
This is a comparison framework rather than a ranking: the criteria that matter, how the sub-regions differ, and how the surface options score against each other.
The Bay Area is several build environments

The court itself does not change much across those rows. The platform and drainage change a great deal, and that is where the money and the risk sit.
The criteria worth scoring
If you are comparing installers or specifications, weight these:
- Sub-base specification (highest weight). Depth set to the soil found on site, commonly in a 4 to 18 inch range, compacted in lifts. This is the single biggest determinant of whether the court stays flat.
- Drainage design. Both the water moving through the court profile and the water arriving from uphill or from surrounding hardscape.
- Border construction. Concrete or pressure-treated board, commonly 4 to 12 inches high, set level - it is the reference for the playing surface and part of the game.
- Surface specification. Named material and depth, with a fine 30 mesh sand dressing on loose surfaces.
- Site protection and access. Trees, existing hardscape, and how plant and materials reach the yard.
- Documentation. Drawings for HOA or design review where applicable.
Note what is not on the list: photographs of finished courts. Every installer's finished courts look similar, because the visible layer is the layer that varies least. It is a poor discriminator.

No surface wins outright. The honest framing is that oyster shell scores highest on play quality, turf scores highest on maintenance, and the granite fines sit between them and score highest on blending with a landscape.
What drives cost variation
When two quotes differ significantly, the difference is usually in one of these, not in the surface:
- Earthworks volume. A sloping site needs a cut-and-fill platform. A flat site does not.
- Retaining. Whether the cut face needs a wall, and how tall.
- Access. Vehicle access to the yard versus everything by wheelbarrow.
- Sub-base depth. Directly proportional to material and haulage volume.
- Court size. Anywhere from about 30 x 5 ft to 90 x 15 ft, with standard courts at 60 to 90 ft long by 8 to 13 ft wide.
A quote that is much cheaper than the others is usually cheaper in the sub-base, which is the one line you cannot inspect once the court is finished.
A reasonable decision sequence
- Establish which sub-region constraint applies to your site.
- Measure the usable space and subtract clearance to get a realistic court size.
- Decide the surface from the play-versus-maintenance trade-off.
- Get quotes that name sub-base depth, drain rock and DG depth, border spec and drainage.
- Compare on those lines, then on price.

Typical build duration across the region is about one to two weeks on site once work starts, with site preparation accounting for nearly all of the variation.
